Planning A Visit

Welcome back to the History Centre. We are delighted to be open again and to be welcoming new and regular visitors to our search rooms. Watch this video with community history advisor Ian who will take you through the changes we have made to ensure the safety of customers and staff. Visits must now be pre-booked and all the information you need to make the most of your visit can be found on these pages. If you do have any queries please get in touch byThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.or telephone 01249 705500.

New Booking System

To ensure we can provide the best possible service to customers we have introduced a booking system for all visits. Please complete this booking form and return via This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. (If you have any problems opening the booking form, right click on the mouse and choose 'open with' top open with Word.) Also, do read the accompanying Frequently Asked Questions and the Test and Trace policy document. If you have problems accessing the booking form, please email or telephone the History Centre and a form will be posted to you.

Your visit must be booked at least one week in advance (although we are unable to take bookings more than two weeks ahead of your visit), and we are currently limiting customers to one visit per week to ensure as many people as possible can return to the search rooms. The Local Studies Library can be browsed by customers who have booked their visit.

All documents, computers and microform must be pre-ordered. There is a limit of six items with a further six in reserve in case we are unable to provide access to your first choice documents. This is because we are following National Archives guidelines requiring we quarantine documents for 72 hours following production.

Our help desk staff will be on hand to show you how to safely handle original documents but will be observing physical distancing guidelines. Only pencils may be used in the search rooms and we ask that you bring your own supplies of pencils and paper. Please note that bags and coats cannot be brought into the searchrooms, but lockers are available, and staff will be on hand to show you where personal items can be securely stored.

New Opening Hours – Until further notice the History Centre is open Tuesdays to Fridays, 9:30am to 5pm. We will be closed Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays.

Photocopying and other Charges

There are no charges for visiting Wiltshire and Swindon Archives but charges do apply if you want to copy any documents. We will advise on what may be copied and the most suitable method. You are welcome to take photographs with your own camera, provided you ask permission first and pay a standard fee. If you wish to publish documents or make lengthy quotations you should first consult a member of staff.

Free parking is available at the History Centre and details of how to find us along with directional maps are available here.
