Work was often the reason for our interviewees to travel to the UK. At a time of labour shortages in the post Second World War period, companies in the UK actively recruited in commonwealth countries for employees. Faced with lack of employment in their home country, thousands of people travelled to the UK in the hope of finding a job here. Some people moved to Trowbridge from other parts of the UK because work was available there. They often found employment easily but then faced discrimination and prejudice in the work place.
