Printed Maps
In the main search room you will find Ordnance Survey maps located in specialist map cabinets and drawers. They predominantly cover cover the old County Series c.1875 - 1950 and the modern National Grid Series c.1955 to 1990. The most of the maps are scaled at 6 inches to 1 mile (1:10 000) or 25 inches to 1 mile (1: 2 500), although maps at other scales are available. Please ask a member of staff at the Help Desk for assistance in navigating around the collection.
Early printed maps dating back to the late sixteenth century are also avaialble, but are held in our strongroom. So you will need to request these via our Help Desk.
Original maps
Hundreds of original maps are also held in our state of the art strongrooms. They include maps for enclosure awards, tithe payments and private estates. You can consult our lists and indexes at the History Centre or search on the National Archives A2A online catalogue.
