North Wilts Entire Page

"Upwards of 10,000 spectators visited the old-world village of Lacock on Saturday.......They were treated to a unique spectacle, boldy conceived, and carried out on a scale, and with a strict attention to the minutest detail, that formed a real tribute to the promoters.....Nuns and novices were seen sewing, spinning, embroidering, repairing altar hangings and vestments.....the courtyard and outer yard were arranged as a 13th century village on a market day, and the villagers were seen going about their everyday tasks."

"Lacock's Wonderful Pageant of History......Thousands Thrilled by Remarkable Spectacle."

"Lacock, choicest jewel in the rich diadem of Wiltshire's beautiful villages, still in appearance almost mediaeval, and unspoilt after centuries of time, drew upon her on Saturday the eyes of the whole countryside, as in pageantry was unfolded a stirring page in her history, when the Abbey of Lacock was consecrated seven hundred years ago."

"Lacock's Great Pageant"

"All the pride of chivalry, the pomp of ecclesiastical dignity and the honest, light-hearted gaiety of the common people in their best and brightest homespun and coloured hoods, was mingled in a medley of colour and animation."
