WW1 soldiersWorld War 1 Research Visit

GCSE History

Give your pupils an experience of real research using the resources of the History Centre to investigate the lives of local people killed during the First World War. This activity is an ideal way to inject personal and local stories into your study of this period. We have a range of source material available to help pupils uncover the everyday lives of local people caught up in a global confilct.

Pupils will use:

  • census returns to find out about their family, employment and where they lived
  • historic maps to explore the area they lived in
  • photogaphs and documents to see how soldiers were equipped
  • newspapers to find reports from the front, obituaries and local context
  • education admission registers to find out where and when they went to school

Pupils will be able to use websites including Ancestry.com, online and paper finding aids, a range of original materials including additional sources ordered from the archives.

All visits to the History Centre include a tour of the strongroom and use of our public facilities; lockers, toilets, vending machines, area for eating lunch. There is full disabled access and a disabled toilet.
