We were excited to work on a pair of Pele’s football boots believed to be worn in 1969, which had a blade of grass still remaining on the base of the soles. The soles of the boots showed severe signs of deterioration in the form of a white blooming layer and areas of loss on the plastic.
Before treatment After treatment
The boots were due to go on display at the National Football Museum so required interventive treatment. However, plastics can be problematic for a conservator to preserve, as the components within them are constantly fighting against each other.
