COLLECTING COVID-19 COMMUNITY STORIES
We need your help. The Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre wants to create a Covid-19 collection that records the individual and collective experiences of Wiltshire Living in Lockdown.
Without doubt the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic – Covid-19 – will be closely studied by future generations, but where will they go to research this life-changing event? Those studying the 1918/19 flu pandemic turned to the archives – to national, regional and special collections of documents recording our nation’s history. Tomorrow’s historians will do the same.
The Wiltshire and Swindon Archive here at the History Centre holds nationally and internationally important documents charting over 800 years of the county’s history, its people, places and events. As well as official records we hold personal documents – letters, diaries, sketchbooks and scrapbooks, photos, artwork and more. With a few exceptions all are accessible to the public, with archivists and community history advisors on hand to help people explore and discover their heritage.
The History Centre wants to create a new collection that will show how our lives have been transformed by this global crisis. We want you to think about what future generations might want or need to know about 2020, Covid-19 and living in lockdown, and create your own record of your experiences. This might be written – a diary or poetry – but could also be drawn, photographed, painted or crafted. This is an opportunity to make a creative response to challenging times.
Many of us already have personal archives – old family photos, letters, news clippings – so now is the time to add your story. As well as your own response to living in lockdown we would like people to keep hold of ephemera – leaflets, official communications, posters, flyers – which can also be added to our Local Studies collections.
Whether you are young or old, furloughed or keyworker, school or university student, a family or a singleton – we want your stories. The Wiltshire and Swindon Archive is your archive, and this is an opportunity to share your story with future generations.
