Historic Landscape Characterisation: Downloads

The Dataset

The Historic Landscape Characterisation (HLC) dataset was created from 2012-2016 using the Exegesis HBSMR software for the database records and ESRI ArcGIS for the mapped components associated with these records.

The full project report was created to accompany this data and was written so that each section was self contained and could be read independently according to the users needs/interests. The report contains information on the following topics:

  • The background to the project
  • The policy history of Historic Landscape Characterisation
  • The landscape of Wiltshire and Swindon
  • The project methodology and sources
  • Analysis of the HLC data for Wiltshire and Swindon
  • Case studies showing the application of the HLC data
  • The project’s conclusions
  • Appendices of landscape types recorded

These files can be downloaded through use of the links in the Resources section below but will also be available from Historic England’s website and through the Archaeology Data Service (http://archaeologydataservice.ac.uk/). In addition, the data will also be incorporated into the Wiltshire page of the ‘Know Your Place West of England Project’ (www.kypwest.org.uk).

This data is free to use but is the copyright of Wiltshire Council and Historic England and not to be reproduced without permission and acknowledgement.

The Resources

The downloads are split into those that relate to the HLC dataset (ArcGIS shapefiles and technical guide), and those that relate to the finalised project report (individual chapters and whole report). The HLC dataset takes the form of a Zip File (.zip) download whilst the text report takes the form of PDF File (.pdf) downloads. All of these should be readily accessible to users but if there are any issues then please contact the Wiltshire Council Archaeology Service on 01249 705526 or at This email address is being protected from spambots.
